Today, BCNC is one of the largest nonprofit social service providers for Asian American and Asian immigrant families in the Greater Boston region, serving over 2,000 children, youth, and adults each year at 3 locations in Boston and Quincy. BCNC serves families through programs through: Child Care & Enrichment Programs, Education & Workforce Initiatives, and Family & Community Engagement.
Red Oak is a licensed school-age child care program which provides care for to over 100 children in Chinatown and neighboring communities. Red Oak provides after school learning opportunities, including homework help, arts, literacy and recreational opportunities. Red Oak is open after school and full days during school vacations, summer and Boston Public School professional days.

Position Summary: Group Leader

Group Leaders are responsible for supervising children during academic and recreational activities including homework period, snack/lunch, field trips, program events etc.  Group Leaders create and implement developmentally appropriate activities and are responsible for tracking behavioral and academic concerns, supervising assistants, maintaining a relationship with parents and teachers, attending staff meetings and trainings, entering data into online databases and complying with all Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) regulations.

Group Leaders have additional responsibilities planning a weekly club in his/her area of specialty for Red Oak children twice a week. S/he will plan age appropriate activities to enrich children’s exposure and interest in a particular high-needs subject areas, e.g. arts (music, visual arts or theatre arts) and STEM.Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Skills and Experience Required:

  1. BA/BS degree or current enrollment in college
  2. Interest and or experience supporting children’s development in the arts (music, visual arts or theatre arts), literacy, and/or STEM fields
  3. Experience working with school age children
  4. Positive attitude and professional demeanor

Skills and Experience Preferred:

  1. Interested in education or the childcare field
  2. Leadership skills
  3. Special skills or interests (sports, arts, music, drama, etc.)
  4. Bilingual speaking proficiency in English and Chinese dialect (Mandarin or Cantonese preferred)
  5. Experience in a multicultural setting
  6. CPR/First Aid certified

Major Position Functions:
70% Classroom Management
Implement lesson plans and actively supervise children during academic and recreational activities. Appropriately manage children’s behavior. Monitor individual/group dynamics and track academic and behavioral issues. Coordinate and participate in meetings with parents’ teachers as necessary.

20% Curriculum Planning
Develop, plan, and implementation of educational, instructional, and recreational programming for children. Gain comprehension of current teaching methodologies by attending staff trainings and professional development opportunities.

10% Administrative Tasks
Supervise Group Leader Assistants (i.e. Work Study students, volunteers, and teen staff). Maintain program supplies and facilities. Prepare daily attendance, incident and accident reports, evaluation forms, etc. as needed. Attend regular staff meetings, professional development days and program events. Assist with any other duties as assigned.

Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and be capable of repetitive motion Position requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly Work requires close visual acuity Position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
